Galveston, Texas

There is a peculiar charm to the island, where a perfume of exoticism floats in the air... even though you are in the United States.

In Galveston, there's something for everyone: history seekers, fans of architecture, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, adrenaline junkies and, of course, fans of beaches and sand.

To see

Its historic downtown district has Victorian mansions, which can be visited at the Galveston Historical Foundation. Many traces of immigrants that landed here from Germany, Italy and Greece more than 200 years ago were erased by a horrific hurricane that killed 8,000 residents and destroyed hundreds of buildings in 1900. Nonetheless, historic properties such as Bishop's Palace and Moody Mansion remain and one can still discover a rich history and one of the largest collections of architectural treasures in the United States.

The Moody Gardens aquarium, where penguins and jellyfish live side by side in an environment that has undergone a $39 million renovation project, is said to be one of the most diverse in the country.

To discover

Its beaches stretch over more than 50 km, where surfing, swimming, diving, beach volleyball, horse riding, boating, parasailing and hydro-powered boards are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

More than 300 species of birds travel through the Gulf of Mexico’s migratory route and pass through Galveston during the fall and spring. It is a true paradise for birders.

To taste

Seafood, Tex-Mex, pizza, burgers and chicken wings are all somewhat reinvented in an organic fashion.

The best pecan pie in Texas is at Gaido's Seafood, run by the same family for over 100 years. Their seafood is not to be scorned, either!

For steaks, go to The Steakhouse, Shearn's Restaurants or Rudy & Paco Restaurant.

Do not miss

Friday and Saturday evenings - Music and fireworks at Moody Gardens' Palm Beach water park.

In April - A festival organized for bird watching enthusiasts.

In June – A sandcastle competition in East Beach where about sixty teams compete.

In October - Guided tours of Hotel Galvez, which are said to be haunted by a ghost bride. Goosebumps are guaranteed.

At any time - The Schlitterbahn Waterpark – With its 35 rides including the MASSIV, the world's tallest water coaster at 25 meters high. A minute of adrenaline is guaranteed before landing in a huge splash of refreshing water.

Broadway, dance, theater or comedy shows are at The Grand Opera House, an impressive performance hall built in 1894 that has withstood many earthquakes. It is known for its large stage and exceptional acoustics.

There are twenty or more art galleries, not to mention numerous shops and boutiques.
