Totally vegetarian and vegan

This is not for the faint-hearted… but those with sprightly taste buds should scurry over!

Far from all-inclusive resorts, every year in the very center of Phuket there is a very unique vegetarian festival.

Surprises for the eyes and taste buds

As its name implies, no meat is served during this festival, even though it is possible to eat dishes that have both the appearance and taste of beef or chicken, which are in fact made of tofu. Of course, it is delicious!

Just follow the small kiosks that have a flag with Chinese writing (yellow) and Thai (red) to gorge on diverse and delicious food.

Shimmering-hot and colorful

What will send chills down the spines of tourists despite the heat are the bold locals who put on extreme performances that become more and more radical every year.

How can you fill your mouth while your cheeks are pierced with lots of knives or sticks? We are at a food festival, after all! Or walk on hot coals. Or go into a trance during long parades.

This festival comes from a Chinese superstition that goes back to a time when a troop of artists traveling in Thailand was hit by malaria. A vegetarian diet and many prayers to the 9 Chinese Gods finally defeated this terrible sickness.

Tributes to the Chinese Gods, joined by the Hindi and Thai Gods, are therefore the pretext for this festival.

Festivities are centered on the 6 temples of the city, with the Jui Tui temple serving as the main one.

Apart from the beach… the Tourism Thailand website lists its attractions in a practical way, organized by categories such as family, seniors, lovers, luxury or budget…

Where to stay?

One suggestion is the Sino Inn Phuket, which is both a “boutique” and “budget” hotel and costs less than 20 Euros a night. It is only 10 minutes away from the Festival.
