Mira Mira

An underground Bed & Breakfast in Australia

Innkeepers Nobby and Sheila Ward like to point out the real name of this fantasy retreat that is photographed by every single passer-by in Victoria: “Mira Mira on the wall, what’s the weirdest accommodation of them all?”

Upon entering the gates guarded by a giant dragon and walking through a dense forest where the caretakers have recently planted 1,500 trees, you enter the doorway situated in the mouth of Magog.

An underworld of surprises

An eerie feeling inhibits you when you look at the natural stone walls and hear the sound of water, added to enhance your feeling of being underground. Intrigued, however not quite scared!  The owners’ sense of humor is very evident!

Colored uplights over the stairway allow you to discover the various parts of the belly of a troll separated by stalactites and stalagmites: a modern kitchen, dining room, living room with a fireplace, 2 bedrooms, a large terrace with a barbecue and a magnificent view of the lake.

To keep away any claustrophobic thoughts, at night the ceilings of the rooms imitate a real sky and are illuminated with stars.

Inside temperature

Ideal:  Cool in the summer and warm in winter.

In the surrounding area

The surrounding area offers plenty, including bush walking, skiing at the Mt. Baw Baw Resort, fishing, and for those who prefer a different kind of exploring, the Gourmet Deli Trail and Arts Trail offer a world of tempting delights. What better way to spend a day than taking in fine art and sampling many of the local products including wines and cheeses?

Should The Cave not be available, you can always choose one of the other retreats created by the Mira Mira owners: the Japanese Zen Retreat, Tanglewood or the English Cottage, to live in for a few nights with as many fairy tales as your imagination can create.

To get there

From Melbourne: a 90-minute drive.
