Roatan: a dive in the sublime

Travel to Roatan, first for snorkeling and scuba diving, or even to take a small submarine tour. Diving is done day or night. Experience a first dive or improve your skills. You can bring our own equipment or rent it, no problem either way!

Honduras is in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north. Roatan, the biggest island of Bahia – 60 km by 8 – has a population of only 50,000.

But most of all, it is the second most important coral reef in the world, after the one in Australia…! More than 70 types of coral and 400 species of fish cohabit with turtles, rays, stingrays, eels, sharks, a few wrecks and other curiosities.

Operators and diving clubs cover more than 90 diving sites and hire conscientious experts, to guide, teach, encourage and supervise you.

What else?

Nothing less than sublime: parasailing, zip lining, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, yoga and a bit of relaxing to enjoy the fine sandy beach.

Where, precisely?

In the West End village, one of the best-known locations, which is well-served bysmall hotels and B&Bs, restaurants and bars.

Prices are reasonable, often less than $100 per night.

And why not choose the cozy and tiny (3 rooms only) Lily Pond? You can even enjoy lobster in your own private room in the garden or on the restaurant terrace.

How?

Canadian and American tour operators will take you to all-inclusive resorts.

If you would rather book your own hotel, you will have to rely on a direct flight on American Airlines to Roatan Island. Or you can reach La Ceiba, the main city in the North of the country, and take a ferry to Roatan.

When?

This is a year-round destination. March to August is the hottest period with less rain.
