Isla Mujeres, Mexico

This island has made the list of the five most beautiful islands in Mexico and Central and South America in "Travel + Leisure's World's Best Awards 2019".

You may be among the 40 million tourists who visit Mexico to find warmth and sun, but do you know about Isla Mujeres?

It is an island in the state of Quintana Roo located in the Caribbean Sea at the northeastern end of the Yucatan Peninsula, 13 km from Cancun.

Isla Mujeres is one of the "Pueblos mágicos," villages identified throughout the country as magical places to discover. Go ahead and walk the streets and admire the colorful murals that border them, make a stop at the municipal square, follow the jetty and watch with envy the fishermen bringing in their catch of the day.

It is said that the island was discovered by the Maya, Spanish conquistadors and pirates, which is reflected in the many legends that locals share with pleasure around a tequila or a Tikinxic dish, which is a local fish served in a white wine sauce with peppers and a red onion salad. Delicious!

Also visit the El Farito Reef, the Isla Contoy National Park and especially the sculptures that form an underwater reef near Manchones.

And the beach?

All this, of course, if you manage to extricate yourself from the magic of the main attraction of the island: Playa Norte, also known as North Beach. One of the best-rated beaches in the world, it stretches over 690 meters of white sand caressed by the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

Its calm waters and its magnificent coral reefs are perfect for diving.

Get there

From Cancun airport, a taxi will take you to the ferry to cross over to the island.

A favorite means of getting around in town is a golf cart that is offered for rent at more than reasonable rates near the pier of the ferry or in the city centre.
